As the world becomes more globally intertwined, there is a need to make more long distance and international phone calls. In the current economic situation, more people are trying to save money. So how do you do both? Is it possible? Yes, with VoIP phone services it quite possible. You won’t end up in the poor house while staying in touch with your loved ones.

Before you think it won’t cost you a thing, take into consideration that you will need to have some basic equipment to actually be able to use the service.

What is it that you need? In this post I’ll go over the equipment you’ll need to use any of the many VoIP phone services.

When I say that you need basic equipment, I don’t mean that you can use the basic modem that send information over the internet at the speed of a snail. The first thing you have to have if you want to use this service is broadband, also known as DSL (digital subscriber line). A basic modem would be able to carry the digital information fast enough to have a phone call travel through it.

You will also need to have some sort of a microphone. You can choose from a few different ways to do this. You can buy a microphone to plug into your computer or laptop. If your want to have privacy while you’re on the phone, pick up a headset that has a microphone built into the set.

If you’re going to use the service only in your home, then your can use a standard phone as long as you attach it to an adapter. The adapter that you will need to buy is called a ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) which connect to your broadband service using a router.
In many cases people who have broadband service, already has a router in place.

So that basically covers all you’ll need to set up your computer to make your phone calls. Once you have that done, you can start saving money while making long distance calls.
